When we caught up with Bailee Madison and Joshua Rush, who play siblings in the new movie Parental Guidance, they spilled on-set secrets about their bloopers, favorite scenes to shoot, and the legendary actors they worked with! Check out our exclusive Q&A and don't miss this hilarious movie!
We're really excited about Parental Guidance! It looks like an adorable movie! What can you tell us about the movie?
Josh: The movie's about a grandpa who comes to visit his grandkids! I don't want to ruin it, but a lot of crazy stuff happens!
Bailee: Well Parental Guidance is basically about the new ways of parenting. My dad has to go away on a business trip/vacation and he wants to bring my mom along with him, so she has to call on her parents, and they have to come in and take care of us. It's a really great film full of love and family and friends and it's like the perfect holiday movie.
As the older sister, do you have to do any of the parenting?
Bailee: I do! I'm an uptight perfectionist for the movie. My grandparents come in and they can't control anything! They can't work the house, they can't drive the car, and they can't work the phones! I try to stay calm, run the house, and keep the house from burning down!
What was your favorite scene to shoot?
Josh: My favorite scene in the movie was definitely definitely a scene where we get cake all over us. I mean who wouldn't want to be covered in icing?! It was all in my hair - it was crazy!
Bailee: The Kick the Can scene! It's when we're all together - me, Billy, Bette, and my two younger brothers. We're playing Kick the Can and it starts to rain and it's the first time in the movie that you really see us together as a family. It was so much fun to get to film that scene and just get muddy and dance in the rain and play with Billy and Bette and everyone!
What was it like working with such an amazing group of actors?
Josh: Billy was a really awesome guy and I played catch with him. He was a fatherly figure to me on set.
Bailee: Such an honor! Getting to wake up on set every day and know that I'm going to a set that is so warm and so friendly and so loving and to be able to sit there and watch such legends do their craft, and not only watch them do their craft, but watch who they are as people and learn from them was such an unforgettable experience!
Did you have any goofy bloopers from filming?
Josh: There was one time where we had to be out of breath for a scene and to do that, Bette and Bailee and I had a little dance thing going and we didn't hear the director, Andy, say "action." So we're still going and he's like "ACTION!" We're like "oh, oh we have to go!" They got it all on film, that was the funniest part!
Bailee: I was two minutes away from going home and they turned around on my coverage, and of course the one time I mess up is on my coverage, but I knew had to get through the scene or else my coverage wasn't going to be done, so when I messed up, I was like "what's the line?!" The one blooper of me is all serious, like "what is the line?"
Since the movie takes place during the holidays, what's your favorite holiday memory?
On Christmas Day my family will go out for Chinese food. We're Jewish. I got an iPad on Hanukkah. It was awesome!
So was it fun getting to film a Christmas movie?
It was! We were filming around this time and we had a Christmas tree up in the schoolroom! We all decorated the tree and then, you know, Josh was Jewish, so we had everything for Josh too!
