Hey M Girls!
Yesterday we had the chance to chat with 15-year-old pop-rapper/actor, Jordan Newt! We had a blast talking about his new single "Cookoo".
Jordan shared some exciting info -- he teamed up with Nick Cannon and the Monster headphone crew to promote the new Ncrediable brand sold in Walmart (which will have the song "Cookoo" playing in the background).
Aside from music, we also discussed topics such as girls, acting and his holiday plans! Read our convo below:
M:When did you first start singing?
Jordan: I started when I was about thirteen and a half. I was in eighth grade. The way it started was, I went to a performing arts school and I was like dancing and some of my friends did music, but I was just playing sports at the time. So my dad, Bob Newt, and my uncle, Jay Valentine, have been doing music since they were like little kids, so they were always in the studio and working with different artists, so I would go there and hang out with them. Then I was like, 'I don't know, this just looks like so fun, what they were doing. Maybe I should try it." I started off trying singing and didn't work out from there, so I was like "maybe I should be a rapper.'
M: How does your dad and uncle being producers and writers affect your musical career?
Jordan: It makes it so much easier, because when I have a question or when I need help writing, they can help me. When I have a question about how I can do something, they know every answer about music.
M: Tell me about your Youtube hit song "Swag City."
Jordan: Well, it's a remix to Tyga's 'Rack City.' He's one of my favorite artists out right now. I guess a lot of kids right now are putting out remixes of other artists; like Austin Mahone doing Justin Bieber and all that, so I was like 'maybe we should try it.' So we just got some of my favorite songs, we did "The Motto" and "Swag City."
M: Are you working on any new songs right now?
Jordan: Yes. Actually I'm working on my new single, which is called "Cookoo", which will be out within the next month. We're shooting a video for it, we're actually starting the video out here in New York. It's also being played. I shot a commercial for Ncredible headphones by Nick Cannon, their newest Monster headphones and my song is being played in the commercial and I'm also in the commercial.
M: How exciting! Where would you see yourself in ten years?
Jordan: Ten years from now I see myself on some tours, living in a giant house, and I'm also an actor too, so I want to be in a movie by then.
M: What has been your experience so far with acting?
Jordan: I haven't done any TV shows or anything like that yet, but I've tried out for a couple. I've done commercials and videos and stuff. I have a really great acting coach, I don't know if you guys might know her, Lori Lively, Blake Lively's sister. Yeah, she's amazing. She helps me with everything.
M: Are you home-schooled or you do you go to school?
Jordan: No. I go to high school. I'm a sophomore.
M: How do you balance your social life with your career?
Jordan: I'm always able to hang out with my friends. I still go to parties with my friends, we still go to the movies, we still play basketball. My dad and my manager make sure I'm able to still have my kid life within music, but if it's something important - if I have to be at a show, if I have to do this, do that, I have to put my priorities in order.
M: Do you have any advice for someone who wants to be an artist?
Jordan: Yes! I think for anyone who wants to be an artist, they should definitely try it, give it a try and give it a shot -- you never know what's gonna happen! And also don't give up. If you practice and really work hard at it, anything's possible.
M: In the future, who's someone you would love to work with?
Jordan: I really want to do a song with Justin Bieber.
M: That's cool! So what are your plans for the holidays?
Jordan: Well I sometimes go to northern California, where some of my family is from, in the Bay area. I think this year I'm going to be in LA just hanging out with my little sister Chloe. She's one and a half. She's the cutest.
M: Have you ever had an awkward encounter with your crush or someone you liked?
Jordan: Yeah I have. Not really on a date, but when you're talking to her and you kind of just feel like you know what to say, but you run out of words and you're kind of just looking at each other. There's that awkward moment of silence. Like 'what do you say next?' and then she's like, 'I'll see you later!'
